Kono

Today I have decided to learn the Kona. I really liked the twisted body position and the explosive jump. I think this move was invented by Kiri Thode in about 2008.

Here is a Tyson Poor performing the Shaka at the Hatchery in the Gorge, Oregon. He makes all these moves look so easy. Most sailors will not be able to enjoy these maneuvers... such is life.

Helpful Skills

Ducking the wind across the wind.

Tips

  • I decided the first step in this maneuver was learning to duck the sail and get my hands on the booms while in regular stance. I can already perform wymeroos, switch Konas, and Goo Screws, so I think the actual throw and jump will be relatively intuitive for me.
  • Learning a new maneuver is like learning anything in life I guess, you first must decide what is your intention. Then own it, make a goal, start the process, and commit to its completion.
  • Spoke to Tyson Poor and he told me to sail across the wind, duck the sail hard, to the water but full softly back. From my viewpoint, Tyson does not ruch this move but performs it in a controlled manner.
  • Spoke to Bryan Perez and he told me the basics of all basics in windsurfing. You have to attempt the step a thousand times. Give that he said the key is to throw the sail down and guide it with the back hand. Pull the sail behind your back and reach with the front hand to the front of the boom.
  • For an experiment I tried to sail far down wind (on a beam reach) and the duck was much easier, however keeping my speed up and carving back upwind was futile.
  • It seems like Tyson shifts his weight forward over your front leg.
  • Once you have mastered this then try the Kabikuchi ( kono into spock )
