The Underground Text of Windsurfing in Western Australia

Geraldton

Excluding Coronation Beach there are basically 3 main places to windsurfing around Geraldton: Point Moore, Sunset, and St. Georges. Live out of your vehicle or stay at one of three Caravan Parks. Sun City, Batavia, or ... Pay Phones everywhere. Places to eat
I normally do not go into McDonald's but they are open @ 6AM and every establishements open on Aussie time -- after 8AM. I am a early riser so I used to go to MAc & Don's and make my morning office, order a coffee (only a coffee) read the free paper, plug in my computer and write.

1. Point Moore

The most fully featured and convenient place to windsurf in the Geraldton area with a grassy rigging area, big sandy beach, shower, toilets, parking lot, picnic tables, and the "Sail West" windsurfing shop directly across the street. Easily recognized because of the steel red and white lighthouse. The negatives are no camping area on beach, a long walk from grass area to water, and some risky reef areas in the water. Situated 4km on a pint
Many kiters. Offers both wave and inside freestyle spot. Nice sandy beach. Windsurf Conditions: All types. Windiest place because 4km on a point.

2. Sunset Beach

A sandy and beautiful windsurfing/kiting beach located on the north side of Geraldton and almost on top of the "Sunset Caravan Park".   Some local sailors say this is the second best wave north of Perth (Gnarloo being #1) when the conditions are just right.  I guess the waves have to be bigger than 3.5 meters and a fair amount of wind.
A good strategy is to use the Caravan Park as a home base because, as of this writing, you get seven nights for the price of six for a total of $90 AUD per week. The facilities are clean and comfortable. A good place to meet other wind junkies.

3. St. Georges

A great beginning to intermediate launch located on the North end of town with a grassed rigging area, shower, and toilets.
