One of my dreams as a youth was to travel down-under and see Australia, New Zealand and
Papua New Guinea. Why this dream? I am not sure exactly but I think the romantic
attachment was perhaps the Kangaroo. To a Midwest boy these are
strange creatures.... I remember thinking I got to see one of these
animals before I die. Later on the mystery and desire intensified as
I read about the Great Barrier Reef, all those poisonous animals, and the Emus. Then
later on, in my twenties, I dated an Aussie girl who not only spoke with a very peculiar accent
but who also dished out a plethora of funny quips.
And who could miss the two crocodile guys in the media:
Crocodile Dundee and the late Animal Planet guy.
Then, by no design, windsurfing took over my passions and I left the down-under dream back in the archives of my past until a common thread brought them together. Mainly, there are a great many professional Aussie sailors I met in passing; such as Jason Polakow, Scott McKercher, Ben Severne, and Grubbie. I also heard about the fantastic west coast sailing. |

Generally speaking the wind is better in the North (Exmouth,Gnarloo) during the Australian Spring (Oct/Nov) and moves down the coast (Geraldton/Lancelin) as the summer progresses (Dec/Jan/Feb) into the south (Margaret River/Esperance) during the Australian Fall (Mar/Apr).

| Internet | - | As of this writing Australia does not have the free wireless HOTSPOT phenomenon figured out. Internet access is surprisingly scarse and expensive at about $6 to $10 AUD per hour. Many places have the archaic pay kiosks where you plug money into a slot. Bringing your notebook to stay connected is a lot of work because finding a notebook connection via wireless or ethernet is somewhat unconventional. Backpacker places and caravan parks usually have some type of email method. |
| Telephone | - | Many pay phones. Cost is 50 cents for local to local calls unless that call is to a mobile then expect to drop lots of money. Must dial 0011 to get out of the country then dial country code, etc... Helpful phone #s. 1223 = directory assistance, 12550 for Collect calls but Aussies call then more appropriately "Reverse Charge" calls. 1225 for the International Directory Assistance. 131777 = United Airlines, But a international phone card to make long distance phone calls to home from a pay phone. |
